Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there.”

This is the story of Gautam Buddha or Prince Siddhartha, who was born to King Suddhodana and Queen Mahamaya in the royal grove of Lumbini between Devadaha and Kapilvastu. Their kingdom Kapilvastu was between the Nepalese foothills and the river Raptu. There was happiness spread in the whole kingdom on the birth of a Prince who would become the next King of Kapilvastu.

Gautam Buddha, I know I am too small for even writing about. Whenever I think about Him, I can see the devil in me, maybe because I am just trying to relate myself with a line that has no start and no end. History says it all started with an empire of an Indian King. When He was born the pundits, astrologers predicted that this Boy has chakras in all his fingers; He surely is going to be a “chakravarti” a Hindi term meaning one who conquers the world.

The Indian philosophy is represented by and reflected in six darshans well known as shad darshanas. One of them is Buddha darshan. The two main divisions of darshans is theistic and atheist. Buddha darshan is known as atheist darshan. Buddha did not believe in Atman, Ydnya (sacrifice), heaven, hell and idol worship, chaturvarnya system. This indicates that Buddha was practical, objective and a founder of a new way of life.
